This is an article publicising the British Liver Trust Love Yor Liver campaign which started on January 1st 2012. We are delighted to announce that the British Liver Trust is to launch a Love Your Liver campaign on 1st January 2012, with the aim to raise awareness by promoting good liver health and offering hints and tips to the general public on how they can maintain a healthy liver. This initiative supports the Trust’s strategic objective to prevent the onset of liver disease in the general public. To accompany the campaign, there will be a dedicated website, UK roadshow, social media, traditional media activity accompanied with advertising on South West trains. If you feel you could support any of this activity or to discuss further initiatives we have planned for 2012, please contact Sarah Wise, Richard Hall or any of the regional support group co-ordinators at the Trust on 01425 481320 or email us. LYL Roadshow The Love Your Liver roadshow will see the British Liver Trust take to the road to offer pop up liver clinics. To help us with this, Eisberg alcohol free wine will be providing us with a double decker bus to undertake a tour of five cities the UK. The roadshow is the first of its kind and will work with local liver services and specialists in Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Exeter. Members of the public will be offered information, advice and a Fibroscan to help raise awareness of liver health. Fibroscan is also a key supporter of the campaign and will be providing us with the latest portable machine (FS 502 Touch) for the roadshow. Website and social media www.loveyourliver.org.uk (and co.uk) is currently being developed and will be launched on 1st January 2012. This will include details of the roadshow, tips to maintain a healthy liver, links to The Love Your Liver Challenge where people will be asked to pledge to give up alcohol 2-3 days a week. In addition, a Facebook page has been set up: www.facebook.com/loveyourliveruk so please log-in and pledge your support by indicating a ‘like’ for our page and of course we will be tweeting regularly on Twitter (@livertrust). Photos and videos will also be uploaded from the events where suitable. Sarah Wise Communications Manager

Ballyclare male voice choir raises funds for RVH Liver Support Group The chairman of Ballyclare Male Voice Choir nominates a Charity every year towards which the choir raises funds. This year's chairman, Eric Boyd, chose the RVH Liver Support group as the choir's nominated charity and during the year the choir's week-by-week collections mounted steadily. On Sunday 8th May, the choir, together with Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir from Shropshire, put on a public reital at Rosemary Street Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church in Belfast. Donations on the afternoon supplemented to choir's own fund raising to a total of £2, 250. We are delighted to receive this money and indebted to the Ballyclare Male Voice Choir for their marvellous support. |

Bowls, Birdies, Burgers and Baps On June 20th a small group of courageous and driven young people met at Dundonald Ice Bowl on one of the most pleasant days of 2010’s short-lived summer. They came from various corners of Northern Ireland and, even though some of them had not previously met, most of them had in common the fact that they had experienced, or were living with, chronic liver disease – (two friends and a sister completed the group). They started the afternoon with a game of 10-pin bowling before battling their way round the 18-hole pirate golf course. The afternoon ended with a relaxed meal in Wolfe’s Burger Bar. This was an ideal venue, not only because of the excellent food but also because the parents who had turned up were tucked away in a corner, well out of sight. The most encouraging feature of the whole afternoon was the relationships forged amongst the young people themselves and amongst their parents, who shared stories and enjoyed the friendship and support of others who understood the highs and lows of life tending children with liver disease. We hope that this will be the first of a regular series of such events that the RVH Liver Support Group can arrange and that the fun and encouragement that Cara, Ciara, Rachael, Diane, Kirsty, Philip, More and Richard enjoyed can be the experience of many more of our young people. |
