As one of the biggest employers in Northern Ireland, our 22,000 staff are dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Belfast and beyond.
By working together and listening to those who use our services, we will tackle health inequalities and strive to deliver the best possible health and social care.

The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust was formed in April 2007 with the merging of the 6 existing healthcare trusts in Belfast - Belfast City Hospital, The Royal Hospitals, Mater Hospital, South and East Belfast, North and West Belfast and Greenpark Healthcare Trust.

The team of 5 Transplant Co-ordinators is based at Belfast City Hospital and provides a Regional service to facilitate organ donation in every Intensive Care Unit throughout Northern Ireland. We play a pivotal role in talking with the donor family, gaining consent for donation, assessing which organs are suitable for transplant and arranging the donor operation.

Organ Donation and Transplantation helps save thousands of lives every year.

As part of the special health authority NHS Blood and Transplant, our key role is to ensure that organs donated for transplant are matched and allocated to patients in a fair and unbiased way. Matching, particularly in the case of kidneys, is so important that donation and allocation needs to be organised nationally. The larger the pool, the better the likelihood of a good match.

Unlike some other NHS organisations, we do not have a direct relationship with patients and do not provide "hands on" care.

The Trust is based in Ringwood, Hampshire and has a small but dedicated team tackling a serious and growing public health problem affecting around two million people in the UK.

We have dedicated resources for people with liver disease like our website, helpline and publications. Our aim is to reach out to as many people as possible by providing information and support, and lobbying for the services people with liver disease need. We have strong contacts with professionals in the field of hepatology that enable us to provide the most up to date information.
